The First Nighter Program
An evening at a theatre that never existed
Every week for nineteen years a listener was walked into a theatre that did not exist. The announcer greeted you in the lobby, an usher showed you to your seat, the house lights went down and a three-act original play began — with an intermission bell, a curtain call and applause. The Little Theatre off Times Square was a set of sound effects and a piece of copywriting, and it worked so completely that people wrote in asking for tickets. As a piece of design it is the direct ancestor of every framing device radio drama would use afterwards.
