The Radio Planet

The end of the broadcast day

The Sign-Off

Stations did not run through the night. Somewhere after one in the morning the schedule ran out, an announcer read the call letters one last time, the anthem played and the transmitter was shut down until dawn. This is that hour, rebuilt from surviving recordings.

Carrier on

Tuning the last hour…

Almost no station identification survives on its own — call letters were read live between programmes and nobody cut a disc of them — so where you hear one it is because it happened to fall inside a recording of something else.

Every recording above is a real surviving transfer held by the Internet Archive and streamed from the source. The running order is ours; the hour it describes belonged to every station on the dial.
