Dr. I.Q. toured. Each week the show set up in a different theatre in a different city, and the sound of it — the roving assistants shouting their location, the audience roaring for a neighbour, the silver dollars counted out into a hand — is a kind of acoustic map of American civic life in the forties. Very little of it survives, which is a shame, because the format was much stranger and more local than the studio quizzes that replaced it.
