Roi Ottley's book, turned into a weekly hearing on race in America
WMCA was an independent, which is the only reason this existed: no network sales department had to be persuaded. Adapted from Roi Ottley's 1943 book and narrated for much of its run by the actor Canada Lee, the series took a subject the networks handled once a year on a Sunday and gave it a weekly slot for over a decade. It is argumentative, unembarrassed and frequently furious, and heard next to the sponsored drama of the same season it sounds like it arrived from a later century.
